Dr. Servitje has been with Lehigh University since July, 2017. He became the Director of the Health, Medicine, and Society Program in July 2022. His research focuses on medical discourse and literature and history. He is currently working on a book project “Medicine is War: The Marital Metaphor in Victorian Literature and Culture,” that traces the history of the metaphorical militarization of medicine. While working in the Victorian period, Servitje also studies contemporary medical discourse in popular culture. His second book project, “Antibiosis” accounts for the science fictional qualities of the the “post-antibiotic apocalypse” in contemporary media coverage and representations of antibiotic resistance. His articles have appeared in the, Critical Survey, and Science Fiction Studies, Journal of Medical Humanities and he has two articles placed in Literature and Medicine, one forthcoming. He has co-edited three collections: The Walking Med: Zombies and the Medical Image (Penn State Press 2016) and Endemic: Essays In Contagion Theory (Palgrave 2016) and Syphilis and Subjectivity (Palgrave 2018). Servitje is a reviewer for a number of journals including Medical Humanities (UK), Victorian Network and Literature and Medicine. He is member of the Journal of Medical Humanities editorial board. Servitje teaches courses in medical humanities, literature and medicine, and medicine and popular culture.
